Hazardous Substances Training
Under HSNO and HSE legislation, people working with chemicals must be trained
how to do this safely. In particular, under HSNO, there will be requirements
for “approved handlers” – trained people that are certified competent to work
with certain chemicals.
As products are transferred from the old legislation (e.g.,
dangerous goods and toxic substances), they will be classified under HSNO.
For each classification, a quantity (trigger level) is established that will “trigger” the
requirement to have trained persons in the workplace. For example: storage
of greater than 10L of chromic acid (sodium salt) will require approved handlers.
To determine if storage of your chemical is likely to “trigger” requirements
for approved handlers.
If approved handlers are required, and your operators are
not trained to use the chemicals concerned, training will be required when
your products are transferred. If your operators are already trained/experienced, then it is possible
that this training will be adequate for a period (“grandparenting option”).
HaS Expertise has provided chemical management training for
a number of years (clients include: Croxley Stationery, Montana Wines, Masport,
DB, Methven). This training has been developing over the years to meet the
HSNO requirements – including the increased emphasis on legal requirements
and responsibilities.
Training is generally developed specifically for the client,
taking into consideration the type of work being undertaken as well as the
chemicals being used. Where possible, photos from the workplace are used in
the training, and practical exercises are structured around the workplace.
